Get a compatible transit card, add value, and tap every time you enter and leave a subway or board and exit a bus. Use Naver Map or another Korea-focused navigation app to confirm the line direction, platform, bus stop and transfer. The exit tap matters because the system calculates distance and transfer eligibility from both ends of the trip.
Subway systems are usually easiest for first-time visitors. Buses become valuable when they save a long walk or reach areas between rail lines, but you must verify direction before boarding.
Before you ride
- Choose a transit card that fits your trip and load enough balance.
- Plan the route and screenshot the key line, direction, exit or bus-stop sequence.
- Keep the card separate from other contactless cards to prevent reader errors.
- Allow extra time for large interchanges and elevators.
Subway step by step
- Tap at the entry gate and check the remaining balance shown.
- Follow the line color and destination direction, not only the station name.
- At a transfer, follow signs inside the paid area unless the route specifically requires exiting.
- At the destination, use the recommended exit number and tap out.
Bus step by step
- Stand at the correct stop and confirm the route number plus next stops.
- Board through the front unless local signs show otherwise and tap once.
- Press the stop button after the previous stop is announced.
- Move toward the exit safely and tap before getting off.
- If transferring, begin the next ride within the system’s current transfer window; rules vary by region and time.
What catches visitors out
- Boarding the correct bus number in the wrong direction.
- Forgetting to tap off a bus.
- Standing on the opposite-direction subway platform.
- Using a low-balance card when a machine or top-up counter is not nearby.
- Assuming every city uses identical fares and pass coverage.

Quick questions
Can two people share one transit card?
Do not plan on sharing one card for ordinary subway entry, because each passenger needs a valid tap and transfer record. Some bus situations allow a group fare request, but it is confusing for visitors and limits transfers.
What if the gate rejects my card?
Try the card alone, not through a thick wallet. If it still fails, use the staffed gate or help intercom instead of forcing another gate. The card may have insufficient balance or an incomplete previous trip.
Are bus and subway rules the same outside Seoul?
The tap principle is similar, but fares, transfer windows, late-night service and passes vary by region. Check the city operator or navigation app for the place you are visiting.
