Foreign residents can open bank accounts in Korea, but the exact documents, services and initial transaction limits depend on the bank, branch, visa status and stated purpose. Visit a staffed branch with your passport, valid residence card, Korean phone number, Korean address and proof of the account purpose such as an employment or school document.
Call the branch first and ask whether it can provide service in your language. A headquarters rule may still be applied differently depending on what the branch can verify, so bring more supporting evidence than the minimum list.
Documents to prepare
- Original passport and valid residence card.
- Korean phone number and current Korean address.
- Employment contract, certificate of enrollment or other purpose evidence.
- Tax identification information your bank requests.
- Initial deposit and a second form of identification if available.
At the branch
- Explain the purpose: salary, rent, scholarship or daily living.
- Ask whether the account has transfer, withdrawal or online-payment limits.
- Request an English name spelling that matches your other records.
- Set up online and mobile banking, OTP or security method before leaving.
- Confirm overseas remittance requirements and fees separately.
Why a new account may be limited
Korean banks apply identity verification and financial-crime prevention controls. A branch may open a restricted account until salary payments or other activity verifies the purpose. Do not use another person’s account or accept money-transfer requests from strangers.
Before you leave the branch
- Test the app login and a small transfer.
- Confirm your daily limits and how to raise them.
- Check the exact name registered on the account.
- Save the bank’s official loss and fraud contact numbers.
- Ask what must be updated when your residence card or visa changes.
Official financial help
The Financial Supervisory Service advertises foreign-language financial consultation and interpretation at 1332-8 without an area code. Use your bank for account-specific decisions and FSS for general consumer guidance or escalation.
Save this checklist
- Call the branch about documents and language help.
- Bring identity, address and purpose evidence.
- Ask about restricted-account limits.
- Test mobile banking before leaving.
Quick questions
Can a tourist open a normal Korean bank account?
Do not count on it. Banks must verify identity, residency and purpose, and a short-term visitor may not meet the branch’s requirements. Use appropriate travel payment products instead of structuring a trip around a resident account.
Why did another branch ask for different documents?
The bank’s risk controls interact with your visa, purpose and what the branch can verify. Call ahead, request the current checklist and bring supporting evidence. A prior customer’s experience is not a guarantee.
Can I get a debit card immediately?
It depends on the bank, account restrictions and card issuance process. Ask whether the card supports domestic online purchases, overseas use, transit functions and mobile-wallet registration.
