Without a residence card, travelers can buy a passport-registered tourist SIM or eSIM that may provide data and sometimes a Korean phone number. With a residence card, residents can usually apply for longer-term prepaid or postpaid service that is registered to their resident identity and is more likely to support Korean online identity verification.
A displayed Korean number is not automatically a 본인인증-capable resident number. Ask the carrier whether the exact plan supports incoming calls, SMS, outgoing calls and PASS or other identity-verification services.
Without a residence card
- Bring the original passport used for activation.
- Choose data-only or data-plus-voice deliberately.
- Check whether incoming SMS works and whether the number can receive calls.
- Ask how long the number remains active and whether it can be extended.
- Do not expect a tourist product to unlock every Korean app or financial service.
With a residence card
- Bring passport, residence card and a Korean address.
- A local bank account or payment method may be requested for postpaid service.
- Confirm contract length, cancellation fee and device installment terms.
- Ask the carrier to match the romanized name used by immigration and banking records.
- Test identity verification before leaving the store if that is your goal.
Prepaid vs postpaid
Prepaid can be simpler and limits spending, while postpaid plans may integrate more easily with resident services and device financing. Low-cost MVNO plans can be good value but may offer less English counter support. Compare the full monthly cost, activation fee and cancellation terms.
Keep your number working
- Update identity details before a residence card expires.
- Keep the account funded or the bill paid.
- Do not delete an eSIM until a replacement is confirmed.
- Ask about number portability before canceling the old line.
- Travelers deciding only on connectivity should use our eSIM vs SIM vs pocket Wi-Fi guide.
Carrier example
LG U+’s official tourist eSIM page separates data-only and data-plus-voice products, explains that a phone number appears after arrival, and lists device and activation conditions. Treat it as a product example, not a guarantee that all tourist numbers support resident verification.
Save this checklist
- Define data, calling, SMS and verification needs.
- Match your registered romanized name.
- Review term and cancellation fees.
- Test service before leaving the shop.
Quick questions
Can I use a tourist SIM for Korean banking?
A tourist number may receive ordinary texts yet fail resident identity verification. Banks can also require a number registered to the same resident identity. Confirm with both the carrier and bank.
Can I keep the same number after receiving my residence card?
Sometimes a carrier can update or migrate service, but it is product-specific. Ask before activation and before canceling. Never assume a tourist plan can be converted without a new SIM or number.
What if my name does not fit the carrier form?
Ask staff to use the immigration-registered spelling and order. Name mismatches across carrier, bank and government records are a common cause of failed online verification.
