You do not need to speak Korean to take a taxi. The easiest method is to request a ride in a taxi app, confirm the license plate, and let the app transmit the destination. Without an app, show the driver the destination’s Korean name and full road address on your phone.
Keep the address visible until the driver confirms it. For airports, use only the signed taxi queue or a pre-booked service; do not follow people offering rides inside the terminal.
Choose the easiest taxi method
- Taxi app: best when you want pickup tracking, an estimated fare and a stored destination.
- Taxi stand: reliable at airports, stations, hotels and busy districts.
- Street hail: use an available taxi from a safe curb where stopping is permitted.
- Hotel or restaurant call: useful late at night or in places where app pickup is confusing.
Prepare a destination card
Make a screenshot containing the Korean venue name, road address, phone number and a nearby landmark. Do not show only an English hotel name; chains and branches can be confused.
Use Naver Map to verify the pin before you enter the taxi.
- 여기로 가 주세요 (Please go here).
- 이 주소 맞아요? (Is this the correct address?)
- 카드 돼요? (Can I pay by card?)
- 여기 세워 주세요 (Please stop here.)
Before and during the ride
- Match the plate number and vehicle type to the app booking.
- Follow the route on your own map, while allowing for legal turns and traffic.
- Wear your seat belt and keep bags with you.
- If the app already charged you, do not pay a second time.
- Ask for a receipt if you paid in the car; it helps identify the taxi if you leave something behind.
Airport taxi rules and surcharges
Incheon Airport warns travelers about illegal solicitation and recommends designated taxi stands. Night and boundary surcharges can apply depending on time and destination. The airport publishes current stand locations and fare rules, so check them rather than trusting a quote from an unofficial caller.

If something goes wrong
Move to a well-lit public place, save the plate number and receipt, and contact the app or taxi company. For tourist interpretation or a tourism complaint, Korea Tourism Organization operates 1330 by phone and chat. Use 112 for an immediate police emergency.
Save this checklist
- Save the destination in Korean.
- Confirm the plate before boarding.
- Keep the app or meter payment method clear.
- Take the receipt and check the back seat.
Quick questions
Can I pay a Korean taxi with a foreign card?
Many taxis accept cards, but a particular terminal or foreign card can fail. Keep Korean won or another card available, and do not assume an app registration means the ride has already been charged.
Do I need to tip the driver?
Tipping is not normally required for an ordinary metered ride. Pay the displayed or app-confirmed amount. If a premium service includes a different policy, review it before booking.
What if the driver cannot find my hotel?
Show the road address, phone number and nearby landmark in Korean. If needed, call the hotel or use 1330 interpretation. Do not rely on an English hotel nickname alone.
