A tourist tax refund is not automatic for every purchase. Shop at a participating tax-free store, present your passport when required, keep the sales certificate or electronic refund record, and follow the store operator’s instructions. Some qualifying transactions are refunded immediately; others require departure validation and collection.
Korea Customs says non-Korean residents seeking a refund must confirm that eligible goods leave Korea. It lists the passport, sales certificate and purchased goods in unused, unopened condition as documents or items that may be required, and says the goods must be taken out within three months of purchase.
At the store
- Confirm that the specific branch participates before paying.
- Show your original passport if requested.
- Ask whether the refund is instant or completed at departure.
- Keep the receipt, tax-refund document and payment card together.
- Do not open or use goods that may need customs inspection.
At the airport
Arrive early and find the tax-refund or customs validation area before you lose access to checked luggage. At airports with kiosks, scan the required passport and sales information. If the kiosk selects your purchase for inspection, take the goods and documents to customs.
- Complete customs confirmation before collecting a post-departure refund.
- Follow the operator’s instructions for cash, card or other refund methods.
- Keep documents until the refund appears on your statement.
Instant refund is still conditional
An instant refund saves an airport step for that transaction, but it does not turn an ineligible purchase into an eligible one. Residency status, store participation, item type, transaction limits and departure rules still matter. Ask the store rather than applying a threshold remembered from an old blog post.
Common reasons for trouble
- The store or branch was not participating.
- The traveler did not have the required passport information.
- Receipts from different operators were mixed up.
- Goods were used, opened, checked in or unavailable for inspection.
- The departure process was started too late.
Official rules
Refund operators and thresholds can change. Use the Korea Customs Service page for outbound confirmation rules and the store operator for transaction-specific instructions.
Save this checklist
- Confirm the branch participates.
- Keep passport and refund record together.
- Leave inspectable goods unused.
- Arrive early enough for customs validation.
Quick questions
Is the refund equal to the full VAT shown?
Not always. Operator fees, the taxable base and the transaction method can affect the amount received. Review the store’s refund document rather than estimating a fixed percentage.
Can I put the goods in checked luggage?
Complete any required customs validation before the bag becomes inaccessible. Airport layouts and procedures differ, so find the inspection point before checking luggage that contains refundable goods.
Can another traveler claim my refund?
The refund is tied to the eligible purchaser, passport and outbound goods. Do not transfer documents between travelers or split a transaction to bypass program rules.
